Be Fearlessly Authentic (+7 Suggestions For How)

All great people seem to share one important quality: a lack of fear.

Celebrities, historical figures, world-changers… they all seize opportunities, take plunges, stick their necks out—all in the pursuit of their goals.

Were they just born brave, destined for greatness, naturally good at whatever they chose to do?

If you ask me, the answer to that is a resounding “No way!”

Fearlessness’ boils down to a simple understanding of the emotion of ‘fear’, then deciding what to do with it. Quotes about fearlessness.

At some point in our lives, we will experience fear. You will. I will.

We all have something that sends a shiver of cold, hard fear down our spines. And, while the specifics of it may differ, there is one common characteristic & the key to ALL fears:

Fear is all in the mind.

Your mind is the only place it exists. It is the only place where fear gets its power. In fact, there’s a little quip that goes:

Many times, the thought of fear itself is greater than what it is we fear.

Might be what prompted FDR to remind the nation that the only thing we should be afraid of is being afraid. It never hurts to be forward-thinking & mentally prepared, but dwelling on potential future events turns into Worry which turns into fear… and can have a negative impact on our lives.

Our brains can’t tell the difference between real & imagined fear—that’s the mind’s job. So, our brains will cause the release stress hormones, adversely affecting our bodies, without there being any real reason for it.

Why do that to yourself?

Instead, train your mind to recognize and eliminate fear, to be fearless and stay on-track for how you want your life to be.

Never settle on a life you don’t want.

Never stop living.

Here are 7 powerful tips to help you become fearless:

Start by becoming aware.

Notice when you experience feelings of fear—you’d be surprised how much of our time is spent unconsciously experiencing fear, worries, or anxiety—and use them as markers for when to be extra aware of your competence, okay-ness, higher purpose, etc.

By acknowledging your feelings, you can work to create new mental patterns… and new patterns create new habits, which create new behaviors, which create new outcomes.

Next time you notice the fear inside you, remind yourself that it’s all in your mind.

Tell the fear to GTFO. Stand up to it, strengthened by the fact that you know, beneath it all, you are not afraid, willing to do what it takes.

Ask yourself, ‘What’s the worst thing that can happen if I do this?’

Take a second to entertain the fear, to give it a chance to play out in your mind.

You’ll see how ridiculous it is, and that the worst that could happen is, in actuality, not that bad.

My mom used to say, “The worst they can do is say, ‘No.’ It’s not like they’ll kill you for asking/trying/whatever.” Then, we’d get a good laugh out of acting out scenarios in which I would t killed for asking something as innocuous as:

  • Will you sponsor me in Jumprope For Heart? [gets shot in face]
  • “Will you pass the salt?” [person takes out bazooka]

Plan for success. Failing to plan is planning to fail. So, cut your fears off, don’t let them factor into your thoughts or ideas, don’t give them power.

Give more power to your empowerment.

Even if your fears come true, what can you do?

Write down a few ways to deal with the worst case scenario. Often when we get our thoughts out of our heads and onto paper, things seem clear & fear can disappear

Ask yourself, ‘How is this fear impacting my life?’ and, ‘How has this fear impacted my life?’

When you’ve felt and faced, you’ll have a better idea of feelings, new and old, you’ve had and situations that may cause you to be afraid.

It’s important to realize what you’re missing out on by staying paralyzed by fear

Take a deep breath and tackle your fear head-on, dude!

You’ll never know if you never try. And you are capable of much more than you give yourself credit for.

Once you’ve vanquished a fear and/or conquered a new goal, wipe all doubt out of your mind once and for all.

It no longer serves you, and you’ll have proven yourself bigger than the fear… so get rid of that unnecessary baggage.
